I play a laser disc from my collection on my 1986 CRT projector. However, at the begining of the video you see me thumb through a few titles from my Video Disc collection. Video discs are different than laser discs. Video discs were a RCA product that never gained wide acpetance. The discs were actaully vinyl like old music recordings but they the video disc spin faster and the grooves are much closer together. The movie Risky Business must have been influential to many young people at the time. In fact the current economic conditions may be a result of the very attitudes demonstrated by the charaters in this film. Even though I think the MAKE MONEY attitude of the film is a bit repugnant it is still a well made and enjoyable movie. A very the ery least it is an indicator of a time gone bye.

Interactive Projector Screen: Low-Cost Webcam Implementation

We converted an ordinary projector screen into an low cost interactive screen using a webcam. This is one of the several applications from our "Interactive Computer Interface using Webcam" proejct. Here's some of the demos used during our project presentation to illustrate our prototype. The projector and screen are ordinary ones like any others in our labs. A webcam is used to detect the presence of any lightspot on the projector screen. A program running on the computer then finds out the position of the lightspot on the screen and uses this info to control the computer's mouse cursor. As shown in the video, our prototype is able to work with the following light pointers: 1. any ordinary laser pointer (ie red light spot) 2. an ordinary pocket torchlight (penlight) 3. specially built infrared lightpen 4. infrared presentation pointer/stick. Our prototype is able to operate most (not all!) standard WinXP applications and several video games (more info on other videos). PS3 Battlefield 3 Input Lag Testing - 1080i, 720p, 480p
PS3 Battlefield 3 Input Lag Testing - 1080i, 720p, 480p Tube. Duration : 1.80 Mins.
I had heard that input lag in Battlefield 3 is greatly improved by lowering the output resolution of your PS3 to 480p from the default output resolution of 1080i. In an effort to show this, I took videos at each of three output reolutions: 1080i, 720p, and 480p, slowed them down to 1/4 speed, and then stitched them together into one clip. Games were all multiplayer Rush maps with at least 16 players on east coast servers, which should be the best for me. Where I see a slight improvement is not so much initiating a turn, where all seem to have a little lag - it's in ending a turn (which is key to accurate aiming in an FPS game). To me - the 480p seems to stop turning a little more accurately. Bottom line is that I will probably continue to game at 480p in BF3, as I do seem to play better at that resolution. Now if I could just stop accicentally going prone by pushing down on the R3 during a gunfight maybe I could get my KDR above 0.7 - lol!! You be the judge. Note that not all systems are the same! I am running from the PS3 through an HDMI switching receiver (which passes signal straight through - no upconverting or anything) into a Sony HS20 High Definition (1080i) Home Theater projector. Some have reported very low input lag on newer systems that have a "Gaming" mode.

I purchased the Discovery Wonderwall projector and now I am comparing it to the AAXA P1 Jr pico projector. Both are projectors so I think it's a fair comparison, I was at first a bit dissapointed at the performance of the Wonderwall projector then pleasantly surprised by the performance of the P1 pico projector. Neither projector can be used with the lights on, but do work with the lights off. The P1 Jr has an onboard battery pack and video decoding capabilities with an onboard speaker.

This is a quick peek into my technological wonderland that I've created here at home in just a small space. The room has 11 speakers, two sofas, and two ways to view high definition TV. The sofas too, are wired into the theater and react to deep frequencies and actually have their own driver for low frequency, tactile sensations. The center speaker on top of the plasma works great right there because when the room transforms for the theater, the voice channel is directly behind the screen, just like in a standard theater. The video of Josh is actually streaming through YouTube when I captured this. I programmed everything myself to do this, including the HomeSeer Home Automation software that controls the lights, and pretty much everything else.

When I was looking into buying a cheaper projector I couldn't find many videos available. So this 5 minute sample video was taken from my couch about 4 metres away from the 120" screen. My projector is an 0NZ Acer X1161 3D Ready 2500 Lumen SVGA Projector. This video is of it displaying standard Sky TV on the 120" screen, not MySky HDi which would be even higher resolution. Also there was some quality loss from using our digital camera in the dark however this should help to show just how good these cheaper projectors can be for someone contemplating setting up a home theatre.

Let's face it, they make some really excellent products in the PC world and they have a reputation for value. Black Levels The black levels were far superior on the Epson Home Cinema 6500 UB, the Sanyo PLV-Z3000, and the Panasonic PT-AE3000U - with the overall 'blackest blacks" nod going Epson. The Sanyo PLV-Z700 showed the worst blacks in our test with out of the box settings. 120hz Superiority The projectors with 120hz processing (again the Epson Home Cinema 6500 UB, the Sanyo PLV-Z3000, and the Panasonic PT-AE3000U) looked incredible in person. They look good in the video, but even in scenes with just a little movement - like people walking through the metro station - the difference was remarkable and obvious. We wanted to film all five of our best selling home theater projectors (Panasonic PT-AE3000U, Epson Home Cinema 1080UB, Epson Home Cinema 6100, Sanyo PLV-Z700 and Sanyo PLV-Z3000) at once, playing the same content, since that is one of the most frequent requests. We also threw in the Optoma TX1080 - a crossover widescreen business projector. But like with any comparison like this - there are some limitations to our professional video camera. That means some of the most noticeable differences between the units we saw in person are not apparent in the images you see. Below are a couple of the differences the camera couldn't see.
